Vanabode Travel and Live Forever on $20 a Day (Audible Audio Edition) Jason Odom Dave Wright Books

I bought Vanabode this morning, began reading during lunch hour, read for the entire train commute home, continued reading after dinner and should be asleep right now, but this book is so good that I cannot put it down!

I’ve recently read several books about full-time RVing, car camping and van dwelling, and this book, Vanabode, is tying together all of that newly acquired information very nicely, as well as providing additional new information.

After finishing How to Live in a Car, Van or RV by Robert Wells, and writing a review, I noticed several reviews that mentioned Vanabode, which I had never heard of before. I found the book and accidentally clicked the buy with one click button.

Many of the author's ideas seem to fit perfectly with where I am in my journey towards becoming an RV or van dweller, so stumbling upon Vanaboder today feels like a gift from the universe. :)

I am very glad that other reviewers recommended this book and I also recommend it to anyone who is interested in or curious about living in a van or RV.

Vanabode Travel and Live Forever on $20 a Day (Audible Audio Edition) Jason Odom Dave Wright Books Reviews

I needed information on low-cost RV camping, and although this book isn't geared specifically towards that, I read the sample available on kindle fire, really liked it, then bought the full version. I'm so glad I did!

I am a 51 yr old, newly single woman who just lost my job. Although this could definitely be classified as a "setback," I'm choosing to see it as an opportunity instead, and plan to spend much of the next several months traveling in a used RV, visiting family and friends, and seeing as much of this beautiful country as I can using my unemployment benefits, my savings, and the tips and techniques in this book. Who knows, I may NEVER go "back to work"!!

Full of numerous practical suggestions, as well as an overall attitude of "YOU CAN DO THIS!!", this book is a definite must-read for anyone wanting to travel (or live!) comfortably, safely, and inexpensively. I only gave it four stars because it is so heavily weighted towards couples traveling together, and the emphasis on "romance" was a little off-putting at times. Other than that, and the typos/grammatical errors (which, frankly, you'll just have to overlook, because the information is stellar, even if it is misspelled), this is a 5 star read.

One suggestion to the author if/when you do update to the book, maybe consider some specific information/tips for single travelers?

Cheers,

Susan
Vanabode is loaded with the wisdom and insights that accrue with each thoughtful experience and documented by the author. My wife and I have owned Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes for short bursts of time over the past 20 years, and we begin to get it. Vanaboding just puts so much content together in one place. The rational and techniques of taking a "Plain Jane" tradesman's van into a travel mode that trumps other travel methods in most categories. We now have a Chrysler Town and Country van and the new insights have me understanding Mr. Odem's philosophy while rethinking our approach. If you are flexible in your method of travel and living, this is the book you will want to devour!
You can not go wrong with buying and reading Vanabode! I bought this book and read through all of it with my fiance. Jason Odom has almost a million miles of van/road travel alone. Always loved the saying "You don't learn how to make $1,000,000 a year from someone who makes 50k, 100k, or even 750k a year. You learn from someone who makes $1,000,000 a year."

I have been driving since I was 16 am now 21 and haven't even driven 100,000 miles total. It's crazy to think that the author of Vanabode has driven almost a million miles in vanabode travel alone. This guy knows what he's talkin' about.

If you are serious about vanaboding, I highly recommend this book.
The book has two aspects of living in a van. One is to try to convince you that it is an objectively superior way of living compared to having a job and buying a house. The other part is the actual details of how to successfully live in a van. For the first part, I was not convinced that living in a van is better than my current arrangement of working a job and living in a house. There is a bit of straw man in the reasons against home ownership and working, with only the worst aspects mentioned. The bigger issue, though, was reading the details of how to live in a van. Odom was very thorough on that, and because of this I'm giving the book four stars, even if I don't want to adopt the Vanabode livestyle. He explains how to find a place to park the van when you sleep, how to deal with going to the bathroom, doing laundry, cooking, etc. If you want to live this way the book will give you a great start. Unfortunately, I like having indoor plumbing too much and working around that is worse than working for me. If you like the experience you get living the vanabode way, though, that won't matter.
I've found no better book about how to start the RV lifestyle now, simply, on the cheap. The awesome thing about this book is that it describes a step-by-step plan to make the lifestyle work. Bob Wells' book is more thorough, and describes more options, but I would never have read Wells if I had not read Odom first. $20/day is possible, but not outrageously comfortable. Also, it does not seem to include long distance travel, depreciation on the vehicle, or repairs. It's also true that Odom recommends a carefully-selected, used, almost unmodified older vehicle, which reduces costs.
