Rain in the Doorway eBook Thorne Smith Reviews
Hilarious, even after all these years!
Typical Thorne Smith ...........Wacky .... Boozy...with a bit o' humor and non explicit sex Wonderful read
Not up to Mr Smith's usual standard.
very funny very dated now
Better known for his ghost stories (e.g., Topper) Smith writes about characters who suddenly encounter surrealistic and weird events. The lure of this new freedom works if you accept the backdrop--a staid, society where conventions make everything dull and depressing. There are good lines in his books, and a lot of silly situations, often involving sex. If you liked old movies such as My Man Godfrey, or the Marx Brothers' movies, you would probably enjoy this. Not to everyone's taste, but the rebellion against stuffiness is attractive. The technique doesn't work as well in modern society. In part, the book is a send-up of business values of the period. The humor is dated but sometimes funny--a description of a shop girl sidling up to the hero like a piece of impassioned spaghetti has a certain charm.
Smith is remembered today (if at all) for "Topper", which in turn is probably known from the TV show and, for old-timers, the movie. In fact, Smith was a side-splitting humorist, and even the Topper tales are much better than the screen versions (or does that not need saying?).
This little gem of a novel is very possibly his finest work, the madcap nature of it more compressed and condensed than his usual, and more zany it must remind one of the style of the Marx Brothers.
And, as has been noted, the book is not just funny, but bitingly funny it has things to say, and it delivers them as cyanic acid at the heart of rich sweets. Fantastic, funny, insightful--a wonderful (literally) book.
I ordered this for my husband who remembered reading it when he was a boy -- perhaps it is intended for young boys. He was totally unimpressed when he read it again. I have not read it.
My husband loves this book.
